Enabling people from New Zealand to Myanmar and Australia’s remote outback to live as independently as possible has been a focus for newly-appointed Auckland Clinical Manager Joseph Rood.

With more than 15 years’ experience in direct health services delivery at home in New Zealand and internationally, Joseph has significant experience in health and disability services co-ordination and development.

He will closely support RDNS New Zealand’s role as a provider of rehabilitation and disability services.

A Registered Nurse, Joseph started his career in paediatrics at Starship Children’s Hospital in Auckland before spending six months working for a non-government organisation in Myanmar as a jack-of-all-trades, teaching English and clinical triage and assisting with rebuilding after Cyclone Nargis.

From there he moved to Australia to work as a remote clinical nurse specialist in indigenous communities in the Northern Territory.

“I worked in two communities for a number of years, which was a truly life-changing and incredibly rewarding experience,” he says.

He returned to New Zealand to work as a rural clinical nurse specialist in South Westland before returning to Auckland to become clinical advisor for Te Roopu Taurima, a Kaupapa Maori organisation providing support nationally to people with intellectual impairments.

“I am passionate about health care that enables people to remain in their own environment, and being part of the journey that empowers people to live their best possible lives,” he says.

“I’m thoroughly enjoying my work with RDNS NZ and look forward to a bright future with this excellent organisation.”

RDNS New Zealand CEO Carmel Conaghan said Joseph’s expertise aligned strongly with the organisation’s values.

“Joseph’s experience supports our work to grow disability support services and align services with the cultural needs of our clients, and we are excited to have him as part of our quality team,” she said.
